October 6 is approaching, parties still without agreement on president

The deadline set for the election of Kosovo’s president expires on October 6, while the political parties have yet to reach an agreement on resolving the issue.

According to the deadline set by the Constitutional Court, the process must be completed by that date. To avoid a new institutional crisis and secure the necessary votes, the political entities have continued their consultations and meetings with one another.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Albin Kurti held separate meetings with the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo, Lumir Abdixhiku, and the head of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Bedri Hamza.

The meeting with Abdixhiku was held at the Assembly of Kosovo, after which Kurti also spoke with Hamza. These contacts were held as part of efforts to find a political solution for the election of the country’s president.

After the meeting, Bedri Hamza said that the PDK’s position had not changed. According to him, the Assembly must approve, at all stages and in the relevant committees, the amendments proposed by the party to the Law on Specialist Chambers.

Hamza said that, once this process is completed, the PDK is ready to immediately begin discussions on the president and cast its votes for his election, even on the same day and in the following session.

The PDK leader added that there were still several days to reach an agreement, but acknowledged that he could not guarantee that one would be achieved. He said that his side’s negotiations had concluded and that the request for the final approval of the law remained a condition.

So far, following the Kurti-Hamza meeting, no concrete agreement between the parties has been announced. The PDK continues to link its support for the election of the president to the completion of procedures for approving the amendments to the law.
