New Term for Abdixhiku or a Change at the Top? Halili Analyzes Expectations for the Assembly

Delegates of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) are expected to decide on the party’s leadership today at the Extraordinary Assembly. The meeting was called after all procedures stipulated by the party statute were completed.

Speaking to “Bota Sot,” political analyst Nijazi Halili commented on developments within the LDK ahead of the Extraordinary Assembly.

According to him, the positions and discussions so far indicate that differing views exist within the party, which is normal in a democratic process.

Halili said the LDK is facing one of its most important political moments, as the decision concerns not only the selection of its leader but also the course the party will follow in the coming years. He stressed that the reactions expressed so far demonstrate differing approaches to internal organization and political positioning. According to him, this should not necessarily be considered a weakness, but rather a natural part of how a democratic party operates, as long as the debate is based on political principles rather than personal clashes.

The analyst views the Extraordinary Assembly as the decisive point in this process. According to him, the delegates’ vote will determine both the future of the current leadership and the message the LDK intends to send to the electorate. A new term for Lumir Abdixhiku would mean continuing the current course and reaffirming support for the way the party has been led so far. If he fails to secure the delegates’ confidence, the LDK would enter a new political phase, opening the race for new leadership and reviewing its priorities.

Regarding the figures who might seek the party leadership if a change occurs, Halili said that no favorite can yet be singled out. He emphasized that the determining factor will be a candidate’s ability to bring together and unite the LDK’s internal structures.

According to Halili, the LDK has figures with experience in politics and institutions who could potentially seek its leadership, but at this stage any prediction would remain speculative. He stressed that the outcome will depend not only on the personal standing of a male or female candidate, but also on their ability to build consensus within the party, preserve its cohesion and present the LDK as a competitive alternative on Kosovo’s political scene.

Concluding his statement to “Bota Sot,” Halili said that regardless of the Assembly’s outcome, the main challenges for the LDK will be preserving unity and completing the process with full political legitimacy. For a party with a long institutional tradition, he said, managing this transition will be just as important as the name of its next leader.
