NATO welcomes Greenland security agreement, Trump claims permanent US control

After several months of tensions fueled by President Donald Trump’s demands over Greenland, the United States and Denmark have announced that they have reached an agreement on the security of the Arctic territory.

NATO described the agreement as a positive development, saying it could enhance security, stability and cooperation in the region.

According to Trump, the document gives the US “permanent control over the security and all other needs” of Greenland. The US president said the agreement paved the way for the United States to take any measures it deems necessary to defend the territory.

The full text of the agreement has not yet been made public. An unidentified US State Department official said it grants the United States permanent rights of access, basing and overflight, while also allowing new military facilities to be built without the approval of Greenland or Denmark.

The document also includes restrictions on military presence and investment by countries outside NATO. According to the US official, these measures are primarily intended to prevent Russia and China from deploying troops or investing in sensitive sectors in Greenland.

Trump said the agreement had been reached “at no cost to the United States.” He added that it stipulates that US adversaries will not be allowed to maintain a military presence or make significant investments in Greenland without US consent.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen welcomed the agreement. They said it strengthens security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.

The agreement is expected to be signed next week at the United Nations General Assembly. The document will then proceed through the relevant parliamentary procedures.

French President Emmanuel Macron also welcomed the agreement, saying it confirms Danish sovereignty over Greenland and complies with international law.

The debate over Greenland’s status and security has intensified in recent months. Trump has repeatedly said the US should take the territory, linking this position to its strategic importance and mineral wealth, which he says are important to US national security.
