Mosquito Alert in North Macedonia: 10 Measures to Prevent West Nile Fever

Health authorities have declared a West Nile fever epidemic in several municipalities in Skopje, urging citizens to exercise increased caution and protect themselves from mosquito bites.

As of August 11, 2026, 26 cases of West Nile fever have been recorded in North Macedonia. Of these, 25 were registered in Skopje, while one patient has died.

Experts recommend implementing 10 measures to reduce the risk of infection:

1. Remove standing water from yards and areas around homes.

2. Regularly clean gutters and all containers where water may collect.

3. Fit doors and windows with protective screens.

4. Apply mosquito repellents.

5. Wear long clothing, preferably in light colors.

6. Avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk, when mosquito activity is at its highest.

7. Regularly maintain swimming pools, fountains and other places containing water.

8. Take protective measures when working in the garden or yard.

9. Regularly replace the water in containers used by animals and birds.

10. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop a fever, headache, fatigue, muscle pain, a stiff neck or impaired consciousness.

West Nile fever is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Most people who contract the virus do not develop symptoms; however, in rare cases, the disease can lead to severe neurological complications.

In areas considered at risk, authorities are taking measures to control mosquitoes and have intensified epidemiological surveillance.

Prevention remains the best form of protection, through removing standing water, using repellents and avoiding mosquito bites. /INA/
