Middle East Tensions/ US Halts Strikes on Iran as Houthis Open New Front in the Red Sea

The United States has halted airstrikes against Iran after thirteen consecutive days of military operations. President Donald Trump has ordered the US military not to carry out any new strikes, preferring to pursue diplomacy.

The US and Iran are holding talks on possible negotiations, although Tehran does not yet appear ready for an agreement. Media reports say the Houthis have launched attacks on Saudi oil facilities and Red Sea ports, heightening fears that the crisis could spread.

Despite the relative de-escalation in the Persian Gulf, the Houthis’ attacks on Saudi oil facilities and two Red Sea ports underscore the risk of the conflict widening.

This new development reinforces concerns that the war, which has already caused serious disruptions to energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, could spread to a second, equally critical maritime corridor, while also leading to a resurgence of the civil war in Yemen.
