Mexico closes 6 artificial lakes in Yucatán after waterskiing instructor dies from “brain-eating” amoeba

Six artificial lakes in the tourist region of Yucatán have been closed by Mexican authorities after Naegleria fowleri, the amoeba known as the “brain-eating amoeba,” was detected in their waters.

The decision followed the death of a waterskiing instructor in September. He spent several days in hospital but did not survive. The cause of death was primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, a very rare and severe inflammation of the brain caused by the amoeba.

According to reports, health officials tested the water in six of the area’s nine lakes. The artificial lakes are located near shopping centers and luxury resort complexes and are used for recreational activities, including waterskiing and kayaking.

Yucatán Health Minister Alberto Alcocer urged residents to seek medical attention immediately if they suspect they have been in contact with the contaminated water. He explained that infection occurs when the water enters the body through the nose.

Alcocer also stressed that the amoeba’s presence in the environment does not necessarily mean an epidemic is spreading or that everyone who has visited the area is at risk of infection.

Naegleria fowleri lives in freshwater, including lakes, rivers and swamps, especially in high temperatures. It can thrive at temperatures ranging from 35 to 46 degrees Celsius.

Infections are extremely rare, but have a very high fatality rate. The instructor’s death is the first recorded case caused by this amoeba in Yucatán.

Known as a Mexican tourist destination for its beaches, resorts and Mayan civilization ruins, Yucatán aims to reduce exposure to contaminated water and protect residents and visitors by closing the lakes.
