Massive landslide in southern India leaves 3 dead and 7 missing; cameras captured dramatic scenes

A massive landslide in the state of Kerala, in southern India, has caused at least three deaths, left seven people missing and injured six others. The incident occurred after heavy rainfall hit the area.

According to the authorities, the collapse was recorded near Meenakshi Bridge, in the Kalladi area, where work is underway on a road tunnel that will connect the Malappuram and Wayanad districts. Torrential rains destabilized piles of earth at the construction site, causing mud to spread onto the road and nearby areas.

Footage captured by a security camera shows the moment a huge mass of mud rushes down the slope, uprooting trees, toppling temporary structures and burying roads. The video shows residents running away in terror to escape the mud, while in the background a person can be heard shouting: “Run quickly, my friends!”

As a result of the landslide, mud covered the bridge, vehicles and sections of the road, while material damage is reported to be extensive.

Immediately after the incident, firefighters, police, local rescue teams and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) arrived at the scene and are continuing search operations for the missing people. Residents of the area managed to pull out alive three workers who were at the construction site when the landslide occurred.

Authorities have also deployed additional NDRF units to the area, while local leaders are closely monitoring developments, as the heavy rainfall could trigger further landslides in the coming days.
