Massive evacuations in France and Spain, uncontrolled flames worsened by drought and winds

A wave of destructive wildfires has swept through southwestern France and the area near Madrid in Spain, forcing tens of thousands of residents and vacationers to urgently evacuate. Severe weather conditions, including a heatwave, lack of rainfall, and powerful winds, are making it almost impossible to stop the spread of the flames.

On the French side, the entire Cap Ferret peninsula on the southwestern coast has been cleared by order of the authorities. About 40,000 people have left or are in the process of evacuation. A significant number of them were transported by watercraft to Arcachon, while others used land routes to escape danger.

Local officials have described this as an “XXL fire,” which has scorched about 10,000 hectares of land since Tuesday. The consequences are severe: 53 homes and a holiday camp have been reduced to ashes, although the intervention of firefighters has managed to save around 2,000 other residential buildings.

Meanwhile, Spain is facing a national emergency after the government declared a state of emergency. The flames near the capital have grown uncontrollable, leading to the evacuation of over 19,000 citizens. The most problematic hotspots have been recorded in Villa del Prado and San Martín de Valdeiglesias, west of Madrid.

Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the president of the Madrid region, described the event as “the worst fire in the region’s history.” She stressed that the combination of extreme temperatures, furious winds, and the merging of several fire fronts has created an unprecedented scenario, adding that protecting human lives is the absolute priority.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also assessed the situation as dramatic, urging citizens to exercise maximum vigilance.

From France, Marc Vermeulen, chief of the fire and rescue service, gave alarming figures on the speed of spread. According to him, the flames advanced during the night at extraordinary rates, burning between 800 and 1,000 hectares per hour. He warned that current conditions are much harsher than those of the great fires of 2022, because the region is suffering from an exceptionally severe drought.
