Macabre details emerge in Ann Widdecombe murder: Former politician struck 21 times with hammer, anti-terror unit probes political motive

The lifeless body of Ann Widdecombe, a 78-year-old former Conservative minister, was found in her home in Haytor, on the edge of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, after a brutal attack that has shaken Britain. Investigations have brought to light shocking new facts about the dynamics of the crime that occurred on July 8.

During the hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, the prosecution disclosed that the victim suffered 21 consecutive blows to the head with a hammer while she was sitting in the kitchen having lunch. According to investigators, the entire attack lasted no more than two minutes.

Joshua Kerry, 28, was arrested three days after the incident in Rotherham, a distance of over 400 kilometers from the crime scene. He appeared before the court dressed in prison uniform, only confirmed his name, and was sent to HMP Old Bailey, where he will remain until the next hearing. The date set for that hearing is October 9, while the trial is expected to start on June 8, 2027.

Security camera footage, installed in the hallway of the house, captured the terrifying scene. Prosecutor Kashif Malik described how Widdecombe was seen eating when Kerry entered through the open front door, wearing black gloves and holding a hammer lowered at his side.

It is believed the perpetrator first asked: “Do you happen to have a credit card or any identification?”, before striking her furiously. Then, he dragged her from the chair, took her wallet from her handbag, and ran from the scene.

Investigators also identified a red Vauxhall Corsa, which was captured by cameras as it arrived in the area and is believed to have been driven by the suspect. In the trash bins near Kerry’s home, police found a hammer and black gloves, on which there were traces of Ann Widdecombe’s DNA.

Her disappearance was reported a day later, after the former minister failed to appear for a live interview with Channel 5. The television staff alerted authorities and the politician’s personal assistant asked the gardener to enter the home to check the situation. He discovered the deceased on the kitchen floor. Forensic pathologists confirmed that death resulted from severe head trauma caused by a hard object.

Although the wallet was stolen during the attack, authorities doubt that robbery was the main motive. It remains unclear why the 28-year-old traveled hundreds of kilometers to reach her home. The prosecution describes the act as a calculated and deliberately targeted assault, while Scotland Yard, through its Anti-Terrorist Unit, continues to investigate the possibility of a political or terrorist background. So far, more than 800 lines of inquiry have been pursued.

“The profiling of Ms. Widdecombe and the specific nature of this attack lead us to delve deeper into the motivations, including those with potential political overtones, as part of an open investigation,” stated Laurence Taylor, the official leading Britain’s counter-terrorism forces.

At this stage, Joshua Kerry faces only a charge of murder, and law enforcement said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with this crime.

Ann Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP from 1987 until 2010, holding government portfolios including the post of Under-Secretary for Prisons during John Major’s time. She later joined Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party and then Reform UK, becoming the leading voice of this force on immigration and the justice system. Her figure was also known outside Parliament thanks to appearances on popular television shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.

The tragic event has reignited the debate over the safety of elected representatives in the United Kingdom, a long-standing concern since the murders of Jo Cox in 2016 and David Amess in 2021. Investigative work to uncover the reason behind the attack on Widdecombe continues intensively.
