M-NAV Activates New ATM System, Around 173,000 Flights Over North Macedonia in First Six Months

M-NAV has put the new ATM (Air Traffic Management) system into full operation, TV21 reports. Authorities believe the technology will improve the safety, sustainability, and effectiveness of air traffic management.

In the first six months of 2026, around 173,000 flights were recorded in North Macedonia’s airspace. Transport Minister Aleksandar Nikolloski announced that this figure represents an increase of 12.2 percent compared with the same period last year, while around 42,000 flights were recorded in July alone.

Nikolloski said the ATM system is a technological solution that will directly help raise the level of safety, reliability, and efficiency in air traffic management. According to him, the installation of this system and the new radar will ensure full coverage of Macedonia’s airspace with the highest standards of control and safety.

M-NAV Director Vladimir Ristevski emphasized that the new technology provides greater capacity, more advanced automation, and a reduced operational workload for air traffic controllers.

Ristevski said that, through the new ATM system, M-NAV is first and foremost consolidating its role as an air navigation service provider, while also guaranteeing greater safety and continuity in service provision. He stressed that this is particularly important at a time when air traffic through Macedonian airspace is experiencing extraordinary growth.

Meanwhile, the new radar system in the control tower at Skopje International Airport is undergoing testing. It is expected to become operational in September or October.
