Local elections 2027/ CEC consults parties on electronic voting and counting in 3 or 4 major municipalities

The Central Election Commission is considering expanding electronic voting and counting in the 2027 local elections by applying the technology in some of the country’s largest municipalities.

In a document sent to the political parties, the CEC explains that the assessment is being conducted as part of preparations for the upcoming elections and efforts to modernize electoral processes. According to the institution, the scope of electronic voting in a designated number of local government units is being analyzed.

The CEC estimates that, given the technical, logistical and administrative requirements, as well as the need for stable and timely implementation, applying electronic voting and counting in 3 or 4 major municipalities would be a reasonable and proportionate solution.

The institution emphasizes that expanding this mechanism cannot be decided without a clear and unified position from the political parties.

For this reason, the parties have been asked to state their position on conducting electronic voting and counting in several major municipalities during the 2027 local elections.

As a preliminary step, the CEC has asked the political forces to appoint representatives for a consultative meeting to be held at the premises of the Central Election Commission.

The meeting will take place on Friday, 9 October 2026, at 11:30 a.m.

The parties must confirm the participation of their representatives through the CEC’s official email address.

This consultation is part of the early preparations for the 2027 local elections. The final decision on the number of municipalities where electronic voting and counting will be used will depend on the technical and administrative assessment of the process and the position of the political parties.
