“Like a jellyfish in the sky,” American pilot describes Iranian drones moving together over Iran

An American pilot of an F-15 Eagle fighter jet, who was extracted by special forces after crashing over Iran in April, described during an intelligence debriefing an unusual sight he saw in the air shortly before ejecting.

According to four sources familiar with the matter cited by CNN, he said he noticed several Iranian drones flying in a coordinated formation, “like a jellyfish,” with smaller drones positioned beneath larger ones and all of them moving as a single system.

One of the sources described the phenomenon as “several drones linked together and moving as a single body,” while another said the pilot had spoken of a “drone minefield” in the air. A third source informally described the scene as “something like aliens.”

According to the reports, this account has sparked debate within the American intelligence community because, if accurate, it could signal a significant advance in Iran’s drone capabilities.

Meanwhile, the exact cause of the F-15 crash has still not been determined. However, some preliminary reports underline that the drone formation may have affected Iran’s ability to strike the American aircraft. There were two people on board: the pilot and the weapons systems officer.

Immediately after the incident, American forces launched search-and-rescue operations. The pilot was extracted several hours after ejecting, while the weapons officer managed to avoid capture and was rescued later, after spending more than a day in mountainous terrain.

During this rescue operation, another American aircraft, an A-10 Thunderbolt II, also crashed, but its pilot managed to eject safely outside Iranian airspace.

US intelligence sources have said there were disagreements over the interpretation of the pilot’s statement, also because of his condition after the crash.

The report emphasizes that Iran may be developing new capabilities for coordinating drones, known as “interconnected networks among multiple drones,” in which several devices can be controlled as a single system. According to experts, such technology could be used by countries such as China and Russia and poses a greater risk to American and allied military operations in the region.
