Lavrov: Russia may approve Turkey’s transfer of S-400 systems, but with conditions

Russia has not ruled out the possibility that the S-400 air defense systems purchased by Turkey could be sent to another country, but such a move would require Moscow’s approval and the fulfillment of several criteria.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the issue during a meeting with journalists in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

Asked whether Russia would accept the transfer of the S-400 systems from Turkey to a third country, Lavrov said the proposals would be considered, leaving the possibility open.

“We will consider all offers. I will not comment at the moment, but yes, it is possible,” Lavrov said.

However, he clarified that Ankara does not have the right to transfer the systems without first obtaining the consent of the Russian authorities.

One of Moscow’s requirements is that the recipient state have friendly relations with Russia and guarantee that it will not transfer the systems to another country.

Through these conditions, Russia aims to prevent its military equipment from ending up in the hands of another state without its authorization. Lavrov also referred to previous cases in which weapons purchased by third countries had, he said, later ended up in Ukraine.
