Kurti reiterates stance: Extraordinary elections after February 9 were avoidable and unnecessary

Kosovo’s caretaker prime minister, Albin Kurti, has once again emphasized that the electoral processes held after February 9, 2025, were not necessary. During the latest executive meeting, he described the scheduling of the constituent session of the 11th parliamentary legislature as positive news.

According to him, the country went through three parliamentary elections in a short period. He explained that the February 9 vote was the regular one, marking the end of a full four-year cycle. Meanwhile, the other two processes, the snap elections in December and then in June, according to the caretaker prime minister, could have been avoided and were not necessary.

Kurti announced that on July 10 he held consultative talks with the leaders of the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo, while expressing regret that the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo did not respond to the invitation for a meeting. He called on all political forces to prioritize the state interest in their actions.

Speaking about the further institutional steps, the caretaker head of government stressed the importance of electing a new president. He recalled that while a simple majority is sufficient to form the new legislature and executive, for the head of state, at least in the first two rounds, the presence of two-thirds of the deputies is required. This is due to a Constitutional Court decision taken 15 years ago, which makes this process a responsibility that transcends the boundaries of a single political force.

The constituent session of the Assembly of Kosovo has been scheduled by the acting President, Albulena Haxhiu, for Friday, August 6, starting at 10:00.
