Kurti Proposes Deal to Hamza on Assembly Speaker Post: PDK Offered One of Three Top State Positions

LVV leader Albin Kurti has sent a letter to the chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, Bedri Hamza, proposing that PDK take over the leadership of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo.

In his letter, Kurti emphasizes that the constitution of the Assembly and the election of the new president must be carried out with everyone’s participation, in accordance with constitutional requirements.

Kurti thanked Hamza for his response earlier in the day, while expressing his incomprehension over the refusal to hold a meeting between them. According to him, issues related to the institutions of the Republic and the interests of citizens should be discussed through direct political and collegial communication, rather than only through official letters.

He said he respects PDK’s decision to remain in opposition, but stressed that both the formation of the Assembly and the election of the new president must be carried out jointly by all parties, as stipulated by the Constitution, to which the new MPs swore allegiance yesterday.

Kurti also referred to the conclusion of Hamza’s letter, which states that PDK will contribute to the constitution of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo. According to him, at this stage, PDK’s contribution concerns proposing a candidate from the party for deputy speaker, who can be elected only after LVV MPs also vote in favor of him or her.

The LVV leader said PDK could make a greater contribution to the process of electing the new president. He argued that this would avoid holding another round of elections, which he considers unnecessary, unreasonable and damaging to the state budget and the country’s economy.

After Hamza refused the meeting, Kurti reiterated his offer to PDK. He stated that, in exchange for its MPs remaining in the chamber and participating in the vote for the new president of the Republic, LVV is prepared to swap the position of deputy speaker of the Assembly, which belongs to PDK, with the post of speaker of the Assembly, which would otherwise be held by LVV.

According to Kurti, such an agreement would constitute PDK’s contribution while also giving the party leadership of one of the three top political positions in the Republic of Kosovo.
