Kurti appeals for consensus on the head of state: Unacceptable to repeat the electoral cycle

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti made an open appeal to political forces and lawmakers to find a common solution for the post of president, stressing that another round of elections would constitute a serious act of irresponsibility and a political adventure with consequences for the country.

During the first solemn session of the new executive, Kurti underlined that Kosovo already has a functional parliament and a mandated government, while the unresolved knot remains the election of the president.

He pointed out that to overcome this situation, an agreement between the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic League of Kosovo is essential, expressing concern about the stance of some LDK deputies who are opposing the implementation of the pact reached between the two parties.

Reflecting on the country’s political journey, Kurti stated that after the full four-year mandate that concluded with the February 9, 2025 elections, Kosovo faced two unnecessary and imposed electoral processes, which did not produce any substantive change. “Citizens were forced to express themselves at the ballot boxes on December 28, 2025, after ten months of pure institutional blockade,” he recalled.

The head of government clarified that the June 7, 2026 elections were also caused by a similar deadlock, this time related precisely to the inability to elect the president. He reiterated that, despite these turbulences, citizens have always spoken decisively through their vote.

“Now we are facing a concrete challenge: a painstaking agreement, reached after negotiations authorized by our party leaderships, is at risk of being sabotaged by some voices within the LDK,” Kurti said. He added that the distance separating them from the solution is so small that it would be unforgivable to return to elections only to end up in the same place again.

He called on all political leaders and deputies to overcome the deadlock through open and sincere dialogue and give the country its new head of state, in accordance with the popular will. “Another electoral cycle would be not only useless for the political landscape, but a flagrant display of lack of responsibility toward the public interest,” he warned.

As evidence that political compromise is achievable, Kurti brought up the example of the constitution of the Assembly, where despite reservations they had, they accepted the candidacies of the PDK and LDK for deputy speakers of the Assembly. “It is precisely this spirit of cooperation that should guide us also toward the election of the president, because our citizens expect us to move forward and not get stuck in place,” the prime minister concluded.
