Kremlin confirms discussions on a Trump-Putin-Xi meeting in China

International diplomacy could bring Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping together at a single summit.

According to media reports, the Kremlin has announced that the possibility of a trilateral meeting between the presidents of Russia, the United States and China has been discussed, and that it could take place in the coming months.

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said the issue was among the main topics discussed after the telephone call between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump on Tuesday, September 8.

The Kremlin announced that the two presidents had discussed the possibility of holding a meeting together with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC summit, scheduled for November 18 and 19 in China.

Bringing the three leaders around the same table, if it takes place, would represent a diplomatic development of extraordinary importance, as they lead three of the world’s greatest powers.

The idea of this trilateral summit had also been raised earlier by Yuri Ushakov, the Kremlin’s foreign policy adviser.

Ushakov announced that Putin and Xi Jinping had previously discussed this possibility during their meeting in Bishkek on August 31.

He clarified that the meeting would depend largely on the host country and the necessary diplomatic preparations.

According to Ushakov, organizing a trilateral summit is first and foremost the responsibility of the host country. He said the meeting could be held if the organizing side manages to complete the required diplomatic preparations, adding that, most likely, such a meeting would not be pointless.
