Kosovo’s Security Institutions Strengthened: New Responsibilities for the Police in Mitrovica and Deçan

Monday, August 10, marked two important steps forward in consolidating the security institutions of the Republic of Kosovo.

In Mitrovica, the Kosovo Police began taking control of security on the main bridge over the Ibër River, while a similar transfer of responsibility was also taking place in the area surrounding the Deçan Monastery.

After nearly three decades, these moves reflect an ongoing process of strengthening local capabilities to secure every part of the national territory.

For the first time in 27 years, local law enforcement forces are taking responsibility for guarding the main bridge in Mitrovica, a critical point that has long served as a symbol of the city’s division. Previously, this task had been entrusted to international peacekeeping missions, and its gradual transfer to Kosovo authorities represents a historic and significant moment.

That same day, another important development took place on the other side of the country. KFOR forces began transferring responsibility for security in the area of the Deçan Monastery to the Kosovo Police. The municipal administration of Deçan described the decision as a clear indication of normalization and the strengthening of the roles of the country’s security institutions.

Emphasizing that Deçan has consistently demonstrated that it is a peaceful and safe environment, the municipality interpreted KFOR’s decision as recognition of the increased capabilities of Kosovo’s institutions to manage security issues. It also expressed deep gratitude for the years-long contribution of KFOR, NATO, and member states to the preservation of peace and stability.

The significance of these two events on Monday goes beyond purely operational matters. They demonstrate that, nearly three decades after the conflict, responsibilities once held directly by international mechanisms are now gradually being transferred to the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo themselves. This transition does not signal KFOR’s withdrawal, but rather highlights the country’s institutional maturity and its ability to shoulder increasingly delicate responsibilities.

From the Ibër Bridge, a symbol for decades of divisions and deep tensions, to the sensitive religious heritage site of the Deçan Monastery, the Kosovo Police is assuming an increasingly central role. In this light, the events of August 10 can be read as powerful signals showing that Kosovo is entering a new era of state consolidation, in which responsibility for security is naturally passing into its own hands.
