King Charles clarifies Harry and Meghan’s status: return to Britain does not bring return to royal duties

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may live again in Great Britain, but this does not mean they will return to the official functions of the monarchy.

With an instruction forwarded to senior government officials, the Armed Forces and representatives of the Crown, King Charles has made it clear that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to be treated as private individuals.

The document was sent by the Lord Chamberlain on behalf of the king, following the couple’s decision to return to Britain and various requests to clarify the institutional treatment of them.

The couple’s status has not changed

Harry and Meghan stepped down from duties as representatives of the monarch in January 2020. Since that time, they are no longer considered active members of the royal family.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed that this position continues to be valid. The couple remains financially independent and has the right to maintain their private life.

The titles “His Royal Highness” and “Her Royal Highness” remain suspended and cannot be used. Their charitable engagements also take place in a private capacity and not on behalf of the Crown.

They do not represent the royal family

The Palace directive underlines that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not perform official duties and do not act as representatives of the royal family. Institutionally, they are treated the same as private citizens with commercial and charitable activities.

Through this clarification, the aim is to clearly separate the couple’s activity from the official responsibilities of active members of the royal family.

Security and the use of public funds

The letter also determines how Harry and Meghan’s security issues should be handled. For any operational aspect of their protection, the relevant police authorities must be contacted.

While state and public institutions that have questions about the couple’s treatment, especially in cases where public funds may be involved, should address Buckingham Palace.

Any correspondence or administrative procedure related to the Sussexes must be forwarded to their office, which operates independently of the Royal Household.

Reason for the Palace’s intervention

Palace officials have stated that the instruction does not change existing rules. Its purpose is to eliminate ambiguities regarding the couple’s status after their return to Britain.

Harry and Meghan returned to the country about two weeks ago, together with their two children. Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are expected to start school in Britain this week.

The decision to return has fueled speculation that they might become more involved in charitable activities in Britain. However, the Palace has emphasized that such involvement would not constitute a return to royal duties.

The Sandringham Agreement continues to apply

King Charles’s instruction confirms that the Sandringham Agreement, reached after Harry and Meghan left royal functions in 2020, remains in force even after their return to Britain.

The couple is free to continue personal, commercial, and charitable activities, but cannot represent the Crown, exercise official duties, or be treated as an active part of the royal family.

With this stance, King Charles aims to close debates about a possible institutional return of Harry and Meghan to the monarchy.
