Kimberly Guilfoyle steps down as US ambassador to Greece: “Serving America was the honor of my life

Kimberly Guilfoyle has announced her resignation as the United States ambassador to Greece at the request of the White House. In a post on the social media platform X, she said that representing the United States had been the greatest honor of her life.

Guilfoyle said she was grateful to President Donald J. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who entrusted her with representing the United States. According to her, from her first day in office, she worked to implement President Trump’s “America First” agenda, strengthen the strategic alliance with Greece and achieve important results for the American people.

During her tenure, she said, historic agreements were secured to increase US exports of liquefied natural gas to Europe, the Vertical Corridor was advanced to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian energy, and defense and security cooperation was strengthened with an important NATO ally.

Guilfoyle added that opportunities for American businesses and investment throughout the region had also expanded during this period. She said she was particularly proud of the Embassy’s contribution to strengthening American energy dominance, developing economic cooperation and preserving the leading role of the United States in southeastern Europe.

According to her, these results reflect President Trump’s leadership, Secretary Rubio’s commitment to American diplomacy and the daily work of the men and women who serve the country.

Referring to the recent allegations, the former ambassador described them as untrue and said she would vigorously defend her name, reputation and integrity. She stressed that she had devoted her career to fighting for justice and defending American values, adding that the claims would not define her decades of public service.

Guilfoyle said her respect and gratitude for President Trump and Secretary Rubio remained unchanged. She said she was proud of what they had achieved together and promised to continue supporting President Trump and his “Make America Great Again” mission.

Although her tenure as ambassador is coming to an end, she said her commitment to President Trump, the “America First” movement and the United States would never end.

“It has been the honor of my life to serve the United States of America,” Kimberly Guilfoyle wrote, also expressing gratitude to the Greek people for their hospitality and partnership. At the end, she prayed for God’s blessings on President Trump, American diplomats and military personnel, as well as on the United States of America.

The White House had requested her resignation earlier, following several reports containing allegations of inappropriate conduct and possible violations while she was in office.

The news was confirmed on Tuesday by Katie Zacharia, the White House’s new spokesperson, at her first press briefing. She said the administration had asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to leave her post, adding that she had been a valuable asset to the team and that they wished her success in the future.

Guilfoyle’s representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The decision follows reports that Guilfoyle allegedly sought money in exchange for access to figures in the US administration before her confirmation by the Senate. She has also been accused of accepting luxury gifts while in office and involving a lobbyist for a Greek construction company in official meetings.

Her lawyers have denied that she sought money and said reports concerning her travel had been misleading. According to them, Guilfoyle complied with federal requirements governing the acceptance and disclosure of gifts.

One of the more serious allegations was made by Eric Deters, a former donor to Donald Trump. He claimed that Guilfoyle had asked him in a message to send her $100,000 to pay off an American Express credit card shortly before her confirmation by the Senate.

Deters said Guilfoyle had promised him unconditional support within the Trump administration if he transferred the money. “There is no question that this was a quid pro quo arrangement,” he told CNN journalist Jake Tapper last week.

According to Deters, he did not send Guilfoyle the money because he did not have the necessary liquidity at the time.

In a statement to CNN, the ambassador’s lawyers rejected these allegations. They said Deters owed Guilfoyle money for speaking engagements and consulting services, and described his accusations as untrue.

The lawyers argued that, as Guilfoyle was preparing to move from the private sector into public service, she was trying to collect overdue payments. According to them, asking a client to pay for services rendered does not constitute corruption.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump confirmed that he was considering removing Guilfoyle from her diplomatic post. “We’re looking into it. Yes, we’re not happy,” he told reporters as he left the White House.

Guilfoyle, who was engaged for four years to Donald Trump Jr., the US president’s eldest son, was sworn in as ambassador in September 2025.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in Greece when The Wall Street Journal published the first reports about the alleged scheme involving money in exchange for favors.

During his stay in Athens, Rubio took part in several events with Guilfoyle and described her as a “strong ambassador.” In response to journalists’ questions about the allegations, he said media reports should not automatically be accepted as true.

“Just because a source has told you something and you have reported it does not mean it is the absolute truth,” Rubio said before leaving Greece, while Guilfoyle stood beside him.

The reports have prompted reactions and calls for an investigation from Democrats in the US Congress.

Gregory Meeks, the senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, called for Guilfoyle to testify before the committee and provide explanations.

Meeks stressed that it must be clarified whether the ambassador had also sought funds from other sources.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is conducting an investigation into Guilfoyle over allegations of inappropriate conduct.

So far, the allegations remain under investigation, while Kimberly Guilfoyle, through her lawyers, has denied any wrongdoing.
