Kikia on Lamallari’s departure: Ministers are not parking attendants, frequent changes signal a lack of vision

Analyst and journalist Mentor Kikia commented on the change at the helm of the Ministry of the Interior during News24’s “First Minute” program, hosted by Ola Bruko, in which Besfort Lamallari was removed from office and replaced by Ervin Demo.

According to him, frequent rotations in the leadership of key ministries are not merely administrative changes, but evidence of structural problems in the way the government is run.

Kikia emphasized that within one year, Lamallari led two ministries: he served as Minister of Justice for six months and then took over the Ministry of the Interior.

“I do not believe Lamallari performed well, and I do not believe he is entirely responsible for this. Ministries cannot be changed every three weeks as if they were parking attendants. Rapid and frequent moves within institutions indicate either instability or a lack of vision,” he declared.

During the discussion, the journalist also highlighted the widespread notion that the Ministry of the Interior is merely a “police ministry,” primarily associated with public order and the fight against crime. He recalled that since the government of Fatos Nano, when the division between public order and local government began, the structure of these ministries has undergone several rounds of mergers and separations.

Assessing the latest change, Kikia said it was also linked to territorial reform and the demands of local government. For this reason, he said, the institution needed to be headed by someone with direct experience in this sector, a profile that, within the government cabinet, Ervin Demo possessed more than anyone else.
