Këlliçi presents the Democratic Party’s proposals for territorial reform: The Socialist Party is focused only on the number of municipalities

Belind Këlliçi, a Democratic Party MP, has commented on social media regarding administrative-territorial reform, asking which model of local government best serves citizens. He compared the way the governing majority and the opposition view the process.

Këlliçi argues that the fundamental difference between the two political forces concerns their approach to local government. According to him, the Socialist Party limits the reform to determining the number of municipalities, while the Democratic Party seeks a complete reorganization of the local government system through the creation of 100 municipalities.

“Which model of local government best serves citizens? The Socialist Party simply reduces the reform to the number of municipalities, while the Democratic Party treats it as a reform of the entire local government system, through the creation of 100 municipalities. This is the fundamental difference,” Këlliçi writes.

The Democratic MP stresses that the opposition’s proposal is not limited to drawing up a new geographical division, but aims to give local communities more power.

The Democratic Party proposes increasing the number of municipalities so that services can be provided as close as possible to citizens.

Another point is the creation of functional regions to increase efficiency.

The proposal also envisages genuine decentralization and the return of powers to local government.

The Democratic Party is calling for sufficient local finances to guarantee autonomous development.

The opposition’s plan also includes local representation, regional development and the strengthening of local democracy.
