A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, leaving at least 50 injured and significant damage to infrastructure, including buildings, roads and bridges.

According to reports from the emergency management agency, cited by The Guardian, authorities ordered the evacuation of around 300,000 residents to shelter centers.
The main tremors were felt during the afternoon hours local time, with the epicenter located about 20 kilometers south of Kumamoto, the most populous city on this central island with nearly 700,000 residents.
A spokesman for the Japan Meteorological Agency warned that the hardest-hit areas should remain on alert for other possible powerful earthquakes over a week, as well as the threat of landslides.
