Janevska: Comprehensive sexuality education program to be reviewed, will not be offered in secondary schools

The Ministry of Education and Science has decided to suspend and review the curriculum after reactions to the inclusion of the subject as an elective for students from the first to the fourth year of secondary education. The decision was announced today by Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska.

Janevska said the program would undergo a comprehensive analysis, at the request of the public, to assess whether it contains elements that could provoke objections. According to her, it addresses issues related to the family, the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, protection against unwanted pregnancy, gender equality and non-discrimination between genders.

“For the time being, we have withdrawn the program and the subject, and we will conduct a thorough review, at the request of the public, to see whether there is really anything in the program that could be objectionable. The program includes topics such as the family, protection against sexually transmitted diseases, protection against unwanted pregnancy, gender equality and non-discrimination between genders. But, I repeat, I have already asked the Bureau for the Development of Education, because I am not an expert in this field, and I will also personally make sure that we review the program word for word and see what is problematic in it,” Janevska said.

The minister added that scientific evidence shows that sexuality education can be useful in secondary education, particularly at an age when students face the topics covered by this subject. She clarified that it was an elective subject, which would be attended only by students who expressed a desire to choose it, from the first to the fourth year.

“Nevertheless, it is the duty of the Minister of Education and Science to listen to everyone who has any comments about the education system,” Janevska added.
