Isa Mustafa Supports LDK’s Six MPs Over Their Position on Bekim Sejdiu

Former leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Isa Mustafa, described as right, legitimate and dignified the decision by six MPs from the party not to vote for Bekim Sejdiu as president.

According to Mustafa, the MPs’ position is not about a specific name, but about the principle that the LDK should not become involved in unconstitutional agreements or actions. He stressed that such involvement would make the party responsible for a process that, in his view, belongs to the political entity that came first in the election.

Mustafa also said that the issue of electing the president cannot be left solely to VV and the LDK, as other political entities must also be involved.

Speaking about the possibility of a consensual figure, he said that extending the constitution of the Assembly beyond the deadline set by the Constitutional Court’s ruling cannot be used as justification for finding a presidential candidate. According to him, consensus, although not a category defined in the Constitution, would have value only if it represented not only VV and the LDK, but also the PDK, AAK and MPs from non-Serb entities.

He added that there must first be agreement within each political entity and then between the parties, while the constitution of the Assembly must precede any agreement.

Mustafa also opposed the idea of forcing MPs to vote according to the positions of forums appointed by an individual. Such an action, he said, would demonstrate a lack of basic understanding of the Constitution, internal democracy and the spirit of the LDK’s Statute.

On Tuesday, a meeting of the LDK Parliamentary Group was held, where Avdullah Hoti, Hykmete Bajrami, Kujtim Shala, Armend Zemaj, Arben Gashi and Janina Ymeri declared that they would not vote for Bekim Sejdiu as president.
