Iran responds to Trump: Tehran says talks with the US cannot continue under threats

Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, said the process of talks on a final agreement with the United States cannot move forward as long as Washington continues to use threatening rhetoric.

The statement came after US President Donald Trump warned that the United States “will finish the job” if the two countries fail to reach a deal.

In a post on the X platform, Araghchi wrote: “Negotiations for a final agreement will not take place if threats continue. Honor your signature,” referring to the Memorandum of Understanding reached last month.

According to that document, both sides commit to refraining from threats and from the use of force against one another. A day earlier, Trump had repeated warnings of further military action against Iran. He said the United States would either reach an agreement with Tehran or “finish what it started at the end of February, when the US and Israel carried out attacks on the Islamic Republic.

“We can destroy their bridges within an hour, we can cut off their energy supplies… Now they have no money. We have not given them a single cent,” the White House chief said. These comments were made while funeral ceremonies were being held in Iran for the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed at the start of the conflict. Meanwhile, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr, responded to Trump in the same tone.

“Speak to the Iranian people with respect, otherwise we too will respond in a different language,” he said. The latest round of talks between the US and Iran, aimed at reaching a final agreement between the sides, ended last week without any concrete result.
