Iran and Oman Agree on Maritime Route Through the Strait of Hormuz: Negotiations in Final Stage

Iran announced that it has reached an agreement with Oman to establish a maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, while talks on the agreement are nearing completion.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the parties had determined the geographical coordinates of the new maritime route, without providing further details about the project.

According to Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, the corridor will be temporary and is expected to operate for two to four months.

Iranian authorities, however, stressed that the agreement does not guarantee safe navigation. Tehran attributed the lack of security in the area to the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital hub for global energy transportation, as around 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade passes through this maritime passage.

Following the escalation of the confrontation between Iran, the United States and Israel, the movement of vessels in the area has declined significantly. Meanwhile, Iran has imposed strict controls on the passage of vessels.

United States President Donald Trump warned that Iran would face serious consequences if the Strait of Hormuz was not opened soon. Tehran, for its part, denies that it is negotiating with the United States on the issue, although reports point to progress regarding the resumption of maritime transport.

One of the main disputes remains Iran’s demand to impose fees on ships using the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran is reportedly seeking a payment amounting to 5–7% of the value of the cargo, while Oman has proposed approximately 3%. The United States opposes any kind of fee.
