IPK launches investigation into incident involving police captain and two citizens

An incident that occurred Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of “Prishtina Mall” shopping center has prompted action by the Kosovo Police Inspectorate (IPK). Those involved were a police officer holding the rank of captain, who was off duty at the time, and two citizens, one of whom was a minor.

Immediately after the incident was reported, IPK investigators went to the scene to gather initial information and clarify the circumstances.

The confrontation is suspected to have started following a disagreement over a parking matter. All those involved were subsequently taken to the police facility for the relevant procedures.

During the review of the case, allegations were made that another police officer may have exceeded his authority toward one of the citizens.

According to initial suspicions, after they were taken to the police station, a police officer at the Graçanica Police Station used force against one of the people involved.

To verify these allegations, IPK investigators coordinated with the competent prosecutor and, under his direction, undertook the necessary investigative actions.

The police officer suspected of mistreatment was suspended on the recommendation of the IPK. The investigation against him is being conducted on suspicion of the criminal offense of “Mistreatment in the exercise of official duty or public authority.”

Meanwhile, the Kosovo Police, in cooperation with the competent prosecutor, will continue investigating the citizens involved, who are suspected of the criminal offense of assault.

Regarding the police officer holding the rank of captain, the IPK will conduct an investigation on suspicion that he committed the criminal offense of threatening.

The IPK announced that the case is still in the early stages of investigation. All actions are being carried out in coordination with the competent prosecutor, in accordance with legal procedures, the rights of the parties and the principle of the presumption of innocence.
