I hope I have your baby”/ Former prison officer who had relationship with inmate and disclosed confidential information released after six months

Charlotte Winstanley, a former prison officer in Britain, has been released before completing her sentence after becoming involved in a prohibited relationship with an inmate convicted of a serious criminal offence.

The 28-year-old was sentenced to 30 months in prison after pleading guilty to misconduct in public office. The charge related to her relationship with Jabhari Blair, 30, who was serving his sentence at HMP Lindholme in South Yorkshire.

According to British media reports, the relationship began while Winstanley was still on duty. The pair met secretly in enclosed areas of the prison and exchanged messages of an intimate nature.

In one exchange, the former officer told Blair that she hoped to become pregnant with his child. The inmate, in turn, sent her intimate messages, including comments about her appearance.

During proceedings at Sheffield Crown Court, it emerged that Winstanley’s misconduct was not limited to her personal relationship with the inmate.

Authorities seized her phone in November 2022 and found messages in which Blair asked her to buy various items for him, including SIM cards.

She is also suspected of passing on confidential information about other prisoners, including medical records. She also gave him information concerning a search of his cell.

The former officer also met Blair’s mother outside the prison and told her about plans to transfer the inmate to another institution.

Even after being suspended from duty in November 2022, Winstanley registered as a visitor for Blair after he was transferred to HMP Ranby in Nottinghamshire.

During sentencing, the judge described the case as exceptionally serious and said it was, by a considerable margin, the most serious case of its kind he had dealt with.

Blair is serving a 12-and-a-half-year prison sentence after stabbing a person during a gang fight in Bradford.

Winstanley began working at the prison at the age of 22, and her responsibility was to maintain order among around 900 inmates.

Her lawyer, Khadim Al-Hassan, said his client was “deeply remorseful” for her actions.

Although she was sentenced to 30 months in prison, she spent only around six months behind bars. She was released under the Home Detention Curfew scheme, which allows some offenders to leave prison early under supervision.

Following her release, the former officer will be monitored through an electronic device and must comply with the conditions set for remaining out of prison.

Winstanley posted a TikTok video showing her being welcomed by family and friends after leaving prison. The footage shows her being greeted with confetti.

“Life goes on, no matter how badly you mess up or how many times you fall,” she wrote on social media.
