Human remains found in Zubin Potok, suspected to belong to 23 missing intellectuals

Initial suspicions point to the possibility that these bones belong to 23 Albanian intellectuals who lost their lives or disappeared during the Kosovo conflict.

As part of this operation, law enforcement forces arrested two individuals last night in Zubin Potok. The arrested are Momir Jakšić and Milojko Biševac. According to the Kosovo Police announcement, suspicions against them relate to serious criminal offenses, specifically the murder and concealment of the bodies of a group of Albanians, widely known as the group of Mitrovica intellectuals.

Details on the exact identity of the found remains remain unconfirmed. The verification process will be possible through specialized forensic medical analyses. Authorities have emphasized that investigative actions are ongoing and that the public will be updated on any new developments regarding this case.

Meanwhile, excavation work is focused on the village of Kaluđer e Vogël in Zubin Potok, at a location that authorities suspect served as a mass grave for persons missing during the war. The area is surrounded by high security measures, overseen by special units of the Kosovo Police and six EULEX patrols, which are closely monitoring the operation.

This significant development coincides with the official confirmation from the Special Prosecution of Kosovo regarding the ongoing operation. The spokesperson for this prosecution, Arbnora Luta, stated that exhumation, autopsy, and identification process actions are being carried out in accordance with a court order issued by the Basic Court in Pristina, at the request of the Special Prosecution.

The connection of Kaluđer e Vogël to one of the gravest war crimes is documented. On April 19, 1999, in the areas of Dreti and Kaluđer, the forced kidnapping of 23 Albanians took place, most of them residents of the Mitrovica region. This group is known as the “Group of Intellectuals.” Even after 27 years, their fate has remained unclear. The Government of Kosovo has repeatedly emphasized that official documents show traces of the Yugoslav Army in this crime and has insisted on cooperation and the opening of archives to uncover the truth.

The excavation operation at this location is expected to provide answers to one of the deepest wounds of the conflict, while the families of the missing still await truth and justice.
