Environment Minister Muhamet Hoxha explained yesterday that the country’s legislation places responsibility for collecting, transporting and disposing of waste directly on local governments. He spoke during a session devoted to questions from the opposition after LSDM lawmaker Oliver Spasovski raised the issue of the Krasta landfill in Kumanovo and waste disposal.

Regarding Kumanovo, Hoxha said the process of selecting a company to build a regional waste collection center is underway. According to the minister, the project is funded by the EU through IPA funds, while the ministry is not directly involved.
Citing the latest information available to the ministry, he said the procedures are still ongoing and a final decision is expected soon. Hoxha expressed hope that the outcome would be positive, that a company would be selected and that the operator would soon begin building the regional waste collection center, which will be located in Shën Nikollë.
