Heavy rainfall in Elbasan leaves dozens of homes and basements flooded, damages cars and uproots trees

Yesterday, Elbasan faced an extraordinary storm: 60 mm of rain in just 30 minutes, around 30 homes and 20 basements flooded, dozens of vehicles damaged and trees uprooted.

A storm with exceptionally heavy rainfall hit the city of Elbasan and various areas within the municipality’s territory around midday on Saturday, causing immediate problems for infrastructure, homes, businesses and road traffic.

According to official data released by Elbasan Municipality, around 60 millimeters of rain fell in just 30 minutes, a considerable amount that caused major water accumulation and flooding in several parts of the city.

Immediately after the problems emerged, emergency and public service teams went into the field to assist residents and manage the storm’s aftermath. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Preliminary checks by municipal authorities found that water had affected around 30 homes and 20 basements, where pumps were used to remove the water and gradually restore the premises to normal conditions.

The most significant damage was recorded among vehicles parked in underground parking facilities, which were affected by the infiltration of rainwater.

The storm also caused 10 trees to fall. Public service teams removed them from the roads, allowing the routes to be reopened and traffic to return to normal.

The problems were not limited to the city of Elbasan. Runoff caused by the rainfall damaged several roads in villages and administrative units and made them difficult to use.

Public service vehicles and teams intervened in the field to clear roads of material carried by the runoff, making it possible to restore traffic on the affected stretches.

Elbasan Municipality announced that all public utilities remain on full alert, with teams deployed in the field to monitor the situation and intervene wherever necessary.

On Sunday as well, Elbasan Municipality’s authorities continued working in the field to clean up, organize and restore the affected areas to normal conditions.

According to the municipality, interventions will continue without interruption in the city and administrative units until the consequences of the rainfall have been completely eliminated.

Saturday’s bad weather affected not only the city of Elbasan, but almost the entire territory of Elbasan County.

Heavy rainfall and the resulting runoff caused problems on various sections of national and rural roads, temporarily disrupting vehicle traffic.

Flooding of agricultural land was also reported in some areas, while local authorities and emergency services continued to monitor the situation.

Despite the exceptional intensity of the rainfall, the preliminary assessment in Elbasan recorded no injuries, while public authorities continued their work to assess the damage and restore normal conditions in all affected areas.
