Heatwave and Massive Fires Keep France on Alert, Thermometer Heading Toward 40°C

The massive flames engulfing the southwestern department of Gironde show no signs of stopping, while official warnings stress that the arrival of the fourth heatwave this summer, with temperatures that could reach 40 degrees Celsius, threatens to complicate the current scenario even further.

A force of more than 2,000 firefighters has been mobilized on the ground to tackle the fires, which over the past seven days have led to the evacuation of over 70,000 residents from the endangered areas.

On Tuesday, regional prefect Sophie Brocas announced that new flare-ups had been detected in 14 sectors previously engulfed by flames, adding that authorities do not yet see the situation as stabilized.

National Federation of Firefighters representative Eric Brocardi described this clash as an unequal battle, using the phrase “David versus Goliath,” and reported that four personnel have lost their lives in France in recent weeks. He noted that weather conditions are making it increasingly difficult to bring the fire outbreaks under control.

Although the city of Bordeaux is not under immediate threat, concern remains high because one of the fire fronts is located just 15 kilometers from the city’s outskirts.

Operation commander Rémi Lassoureille warned of a threat hanging over the Bordeaux metropolitan area, as the dense presence of smoke has significantly damaged air quality.

Residents and visitors describe a layer of smoke and ash enveloping the city, prompting many citizens to wear masks and stay indoors. Some bars and restaurants have suspended service due to the polluted air.

Meanwhile, the heatwave is not limited to French territory. In Spain, temperatures are forecast to be just as high, reaching up to 40°C, with the Madrid region among the hardest hit by fires.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez acknowledged that the country still faces difficult days ahead, but added that signs of gradual improvement are being observed. In Portugal, around 400 firefighters are battling a large-scale fire in the eastern area of Guarda.
