Statements by Zohran Mamdani, mayor of New York City, regarding a possible arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu during a possible visit to the city for the UN General Assembly, have been strongly condemned by the Israeli prime minister’s office.

Through a post on social network X, Netanyahu’s team advised Mamdani to pay attention to the internal challenges of the metropolis, instead of engaging in criticism of the Israeli leader. It was emphasized that he “should focus on repairing the damage his policies are causing to New York.” According to the same source, the newly elected mayor aims to divert attention from his decisions by attacking “the leader of the Jewish state, the only democracy in the Middle East.”

This response came after a statement Mamdani gave to the New York Times, in which he asserted that “Netanyahu’s place is in The Hague.” He was referring to the arrest warrant issued against the prime minister by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Mamdani described Netanyahu as “a war criminal for whom an arrest warrant has been issued,” but admitted that he was not sure whether New York legislation gave him the right to detain a foreign official. “We will act within the limits allowed by the law in New York,” he declared.
