Haxhiu: Date of Parliamentary Session to Be Announced on Friday

The new legislature of the Assembly of Kosovo is expected to convene during the first week of August. Acting President Albulena Haxhiu has announced that the official date for the constitutive session will be made public this Friday.

Haxhiu explained that the date was not set hastily, in order to give political parties time to continue negotiations toward an agreement, particularly on the election of the country’s president. She also spoke positively about acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s meetings with the opposition. However, talks with the LDK have currently been suspended due to internal developments within the party.

According to university professor Mazllum Baraliu, ongoing meetings are needed between the acting president and political parties, alongside discussions on forming a governing coalition. He believes the parties should step up their efforts to avoid political crises.

“Unfortunately, knowing this political class to be irresponsible—even highly irresponsible and contradictory—because they say one thing today, another tomorrow, and then act differently, I am not very optimistic. Nevertheless, the circumstances are such that these parties should not go to elections again, as that would be politically fatal for all parties, for some more than others,” university professor Mazllum Baraliu said.

Political experts are also calling for greater responsibility from all political actors. According to them, Kosovo cannot afford further delays, because every day without functioning institutions harms the country’s reform processes and Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

“The deepening internal crisis within the Democratic League of Kosovo appears likely to make it even more difficult for the process to continue. Any agreement that may emerge from this political party risks being undermined by the lack of several votes, while we know the importance of every single vote. As for the PDK, both in the past and now, there has been reluctance to cooperate, perhaps because these are the two largest parties in the country, with a significant gap between them. Nevertheless, cooperation between these two parties could provide solutions to many issues and problems,” political analyst Fatime Hajdari said.

With the constitutive session expected to be held in the first week of August, the focus remains on talks among the political parties. The coming days are expected to show whether the necessary compromise will be reached to constitute the Assembly and pave the way for the formation of Kosovo’s new institutions.
