Haxhiu Calls for Consensus President, LVV Ready for Agreement

Following the conclusion of the meeting with the leaders of the political parties that accepted her invitation, Kosovo’s acting president, Albulena Haxhiu, held a press conference. The meeting addressed the political situation and possible ways to overcome the institutional deadlock.

Haxhiu said the purpose of the meeting was to consider whether, under the current circumstances, there was a common path forward. She thanked the leaders of the political parties who attended.

According to her, two different political approaches have emerged regarding the constitution of the Assembly and the election of the president. LVV and its partners believe that beginning the process of constituting the Assembly without a prior agreement on the president could lead to a repeat of last year’s crisis. Meanwhile, PDK, LDK and AAK want the Assembly to be constituted first, followed by discussions on the president.

The acting president said she listened to the positions of all political parties during the meeting. She said all sides expressed support for making every possible effort to reach an agreement on the president and avoid elections.

Haxhiu stressed that she does not expect the political parties to agree on every issue, but called for compromise. According to her, if an agreement cannot be reached today, there is no guarantee that new elections will lead the parties to agree tomorrow.

She also announced that acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated during the meeting that he has the votes needed to elect the Speaker of the Assembly. Consequently, according to him, the main issue that remains to be resolved is an agreement on the president.

Haxhiu called on the political parties to conduct discussions on a consensus president by proposing specific names, as such a process could help break the political deadlock.

She emphasized that the Vetëvendosje Movement has reiterated its readiness to support a consensus president, with the aim of avoiding new elections and finding a solution to the institutional crisis.
