Haxhiu: Bekim Sejdiu could return to the presidential race if the LDK guarantees the presence of its deputies

Acting President Albulena Haxhiu has stated that Bekim Sejdiu could return as a candidate for president of Kosovo if the six LDK deputies who did not support his candidacy pledge to remain in the Assembly hall during the vote, reports Ekonomia Online.

According to Haxhiu, Sejdiu withdrew from the race because he did not have the necessary support from these deputies. She stressed that the agreement between Vetëvendosje and the LDK on his candidacy remains in force.

“The candidate for president is Mr. Bekim Sejdiu. He withdrew from the race because he did not have the support of six LDK deputies. We have not withdrawn from the agreement. I am convinced that if they declare that they will remain in the hall, Mr. Sejdiu will return. He withdrew because he did not have the votes,” Haxhiu said.

She said that Sejdiu’s candidacy could be renewed if the required support in the Assembly is secured, while also highlighting his professional and moral standing.

“I believe that if there is a guarantee that the necessary two-thirds majority is present in the Assembly, he will return. I appreciated the fact that he agreed to be the joint candidate of Vetëvendosje and the LDK. I also value his high professional and moral integrity, as Mr. Sejdiu has served with dignity in every position he has held. For this reason, I considered that such a figure is suited to the position of president,” she said.

Haxhiu said that negotiations to overcome the political crisis are being led by the acting prime minister and Vetëvendosje leader, Albin Kurti. She called on political parties to show seriousness and constructiveness.

“The negotiations are being led by Prime Minister Kurti, who is also the leader of Vetëvendosje, and these meetings may produce important issues for advancing the situation and avoiding early elections. Following the Hague decision, the biggest mistake that could be made now would be to send the country to early elections. Therefore, I call on political parties to adopt a serious and constructive approach,” Haxhiu declared.
