Greek media: Alket Rizai mentioned in investigation into murder at Domokos prison, testimony links him to the crime scene

Alket Rizai has once again come under the spotlight of the Greek media, this time because of another serious incident linked to Domokos prison.

The investigation concerns the murder of inmate Antonis Papadatos, who was shot dead on 15 February 2026 inside the prison. Testimony and evidence collected by investigators allegedly place Rizai near the area where the crime took place.

According to Greek television station SKAI, Papadatos was killed with three bullets. A Bulgarian national serving a life sentence has been charged in connection with the incident and has admitted to being the perpetrator.

Despite this, the investigation has not been completed, and the full circumstances of the incident remain to be clarified. The director of Domokos prison, who was present when the murder occurred and was later questioned by police, is also in pre-trial detention.

According to the case file, shortly before the crime, the Bulgarian inmate asked Papadatos to leave his cell and accompany him. The two prisoners walked through the corridors leading toward the prison’s main section.

In the administrative area, where the victim, the Bulgarian inmate and the prison director were located, the security cameras did not provide full coverage. Greek media describe it as a blind spot in the monitoring system.

It was precisely in this area that Papadatos was shot three times: one bullet struck the back of his head, while two others hit him in the face.

The testimony included in the case file also mentions Alket Rizai. A prison employee said he heard the gunshots and then saw Rizai leaving the old prison area.

According to SKAI reports, camera footage also shows Rizai moving toward the main section of the prison together with other people.

The Bulgarian inmate has presented a different version of what happened. He claims that Papadatos had attempted to kill the prison director with a revolver hidden in his clothing.

According to his statement, he intervened to take the weapon from Papadatos, and during the struggle the revolver went off, causing the wounds that led to his death.

However, Greek media report that investigators are also examining the possibility that the murder was a contract killing rather than the result of a sudden confrontation.

Alket Rizai has denied the allegations of involvement. He stated that he was not in the old prison at the time of the murder and had no reason to intervene in the incident.

During the investigation, according to reports, traces of blood were found on his shoes, while traces of gunpowder were detected on his clothes.

Nevertheless, the case file does not accuse Rizai of the murder. In this case, he is considered a witness.

The lawyer for the prison director, Dimitris Gavelas, said that his client was at the scene of the crime but had no way of preventing the murder. According to him, the defense will be based on the evidence contained in the case file.

Rizai’s name has also been mentioned in Greece in connection with his escape from prison. Greek authorities continue their search to locate and apprehend him, while he is also suspected of having been involved in a shooting incident at a beach bar in Anavyssos.

One line of the investigation concerns the possibility that Rizai fled to Albania through northern Greece. So far, this remains only a hypothesis held by investigators and has not been officially confirmed.
