Greece marks 13th anniversary of Pavlos Fyssas’s murder, anti-fascist protests held in several cities

Greece is commemorating today the 13th anniversary of the murder of musician and anti-fascist activist Pavlos Fyssas, while rallies and marches have been planned in several cities across the country.

The main event will be held in Keratsini, near Piraeus, at 5:30 p.m. at the monument dedicated to Fyssas, erected at the site where he was killed on the night of September 18, 2013. After the rally, protesters will march toward Kokkinia and the metro station in Nikaia.

Because of the rally, Greek police have announced special security measures and traffic restrictions in the area.

In Thessaloniki, the march will begin at 6:00 p.m. from Kamara and continue through the city center. The protest will also be accompanied by the temporary closure of several metro stations.

Similar events have also been announced in Patras, Ioannina, Heraklion and Chania, on Crete.

Fyssas, known on the music scene as Killah P, was 34 years old when he was killed on September 18, 2013. The incident led to an acceleration of investigations into Golden Dawn, while seven years later the organization’s leaders were found guilty by the Greek justice system of running a criminal organization.

This year’s anniversary is taking place three days after the release from prison of Ilias Kasidiaris, the former spokesman and one of the leaders of Golden Dawn. After completing his sentence, he immediately stated that he intends to return to the political scene.
