Government finds initiative on Specialist Chambers lawful; Tahiraj says PDK is making political calculations

The Government of Kosovo has concluded that the Democratic Party of Kosovo’s initiative to amend the Law on the Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor’s Office faces no legal obstacles.

The government adopted this position on October 2 and forwarded it, along with the executive’s assessment, to the Assembly of Kosovo.

PDK, through its leader Bedri Hamza, has called for the legal amendments to pass in two readings. He said that, once this process is complete, the party is ready to work toward a solution on the election of the president.

“PDK’s request has been, and remains, that the law be passed in two readings. After that, on the same day and at the next session, we are ready to sit down, find a solution on the president and vote for the president,” Hamza said.

Meanwhile, activist and publicist Saim Tahiraj sees PDK’s position as an attempt to make the issue of the Specialist Chambers a condition for a political agreement with Vetëvendosje.

According to Tahiraj, the party is using citizens’ protests, statements and emotional reactions as political capital and as a way to expand its electoral base.

Tahiraj considers this a political calculation and stresses that citizens need more transparency and accountability from political parties.

“PDK is linking its support for electing the president to a vote on amendments to the Law on the Specialist Chambers in order to justify joining a coalition with VV.

At the same time, it is trying to turn protests, statements and other political actions into political gains and an opportunity to increase its electoral support.

In this way, an issue that is very sensitive for Kosovar society is being used in the political horse-trading of the moment.

This is what PDK calls ‘political morality’.

When justice is made a condition for political agreements and citizens’ emotions are exploited for party interests, this amounts to manipulating the public and its feelings.

Citizens deserve transparency and political accountability, not calculations presented as principles,” Tahiraj told “Bota sot”.
