Gostivar Epidemic: Test Results Expected Today to Determine the Source

The health situation in Gostivar remains concerning as the number of residents seeking medical treatment for gastrointestinal problems continues to rise. Due to the worsening situation, epidemiologists declared an epidemic in the city yesterday, INA reports.

The results of tests on samples collected from Gostivar’s water supply system are expected to be made public today. They will determine whether the contamination was caused by drinking water or whether the cases are linked to another source of infection.

Water from Gostivar’s public water supply remains prohibited for consumption under a decision issued by the Food and Veterinary Agency on Friday.

The Prosecutor’s Office is also awaiting the laboratory results and will then decide how to proceed. By order of the public prosecutor, the Vrutok area, where the investigation is focused, remains secured.

Several initiatives have been undertaken to ensure residents have access to drinking water during the situation. The government has decided to distribute 50,000 bottles of water daily, with the aim of meeting residents’ basic needs until the tests are completed and the situation returns to normal.

A press conference has been announced for today at 12:30 at the Government of North Macedonia. Health Minister Sasho Klekovski, Public Health Institute Director Marija Andonovska and General and Common Affairs Service Director Ivica Tomovski are expected to brief the public on the latest developments, test results and measures taken to address the situation./INA/
