Former Prime Minister Ljubčo Georgievski, who led the government during the 2001 conflict, has revealed for the first time whether a plan to partition Macedonia existed at the time. The issue has been raised several times by Ali Ahmeti, leader of DUI and former political leader of the NLA, INA reports.

In an interview with TV24 in recent days, Georgievski said that the leaders of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU) had presented him with a plan that became known as the “infamous” plan, which he later discussed with the country’s leadership. According to him, Arbën Xhaferi, who was then leader of the DPA and part of the government, was also informed about the idea and, it is implied, subsequently informed the NLA as well.
Below is the full statement by former Prime Minister Ljubčo Georgievski:
“I first heard about the infamous plan from academicians Gjorgji Stradellov, Bllazhe Ristevski and Gjorgji Efremov, who was the president. Regardless of that, we later sat down as the country’s leadership—Stojan Andov, President Boris Trajkovski and me—and reached the same conclusion: if they do not want to live with us, then we should separate. We discussed this idea. Boris Trajkovski made it known to the international community and the media. The reasoning was very simple: why should we fight and kill one another if they do not want us to live together? In that case, we should separate. At the time, I informed Arbën Xhaferi, and he asked me to give him a week or 10 days. He then informed me that the proposal was not supported and that they did not want it. He did not tell me who rejected it, whether it was the international community or them, meaning the NLA. However, although they opposed the plan, their statements indicated that they were fighting for territory.” /INA/
