Gazmir Raci: Parties must take responsibility for unblocking parliament on Wednesday

Newly elected lawmakers are expected to return to the Assembly’s constitutive session on Wednesday morning, after it failed to conclude during the previous month.

The session is intended to advance the formation of new institutions following the June elections, while political entities face mounting pressure to find a solution and end the prolonged institutional deadlock.

Political analyst Gazmir Raci has called on the parties to act responsibly at Wednesday’s session and seriously commit to completing the constitution of the Assembly.

He stressed that, after a prolonged political blockade, Kosovo can no longer afford to lose time and prolong the institutional crisis.

“I expect the political entities to take responsibility on Wednesday and make concrete efforts to complete the constitution of the Assembly. After such a long period of deadlock, Kosovo does not have the time to continue with the institutional crisis,” Raci declared.

He added that the constitution of the Assembly is the first prerequisite for making the new institutions functional. According to him, a political agreement to conclude this procedure would enable the continuation of other constitutional processes.

Raci described the acceptance of the principle of electing a consensual president as a positive development, while assessing that Bekim Sejdiu would be a suitable candidate for the post.

“It is a positive signal that the Vetëvendosje Movement has accepted the principle of a consensual president. The president should represent the unity of the country, not just a parliamentary majority. In this regard, Dr. Bekim Sejdiu was the right name at the right time, as he has an institutional and professional profile and the potential to build a broader political consensus,” he said.

The analyst expressed regret over the position of six LDK lawmakers who, according to information made public, refuse to support this candidacy for reasons related to personal relationships or disagreements.

“Personal clashes and interests cannot be placed above Kosovo’s need for stable institutions. The country must not lose the opportunity to reach a consensus because of individual calculations,” Raci said.

He concluded that Kosovo needs functional institutions, political stability and a focus on domestic challenges and the international agenda, emphasizing that responsibility now lies directly with the elected representatives of the citizens.
