Former CIA agent with 303 gold bars worth $40 million appears in court

David Rush, a former CIA officer, is expected to appear today in a U.S. federal court, where a hearing on a possible plea agreement will be held. Authorities seized 303 gold bars worth approximately $40 million from his home.

Rush has been accused of embezzling public funds and is suspected of manipulating payroll records. According to NBC News, the investigation has expanded as authorities determine whether he created a fictitious CIA program and obtained money or other assets through it.

Investigators suspect there may also be other undisclosed funds or items, beyond the assets already found and seized at the former officer’s home.

Before his arrest, Rush had been suspended from his duties and was later dismissed by the CIA. He remains in custody and has yet to state whether he will plead guilty to the charges against him.

Such an agreement would save the U.S. government a lengthy trial. A trial could reveal how the CIA handled the case and bring to light information about the agency’s operations.

The investigation has also caused concern at the Pentagon. Rush had worked on classified naval programs and, according to NBC News, had a professional relationship with Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg.

Feinberg was questioned by the FBI during the investigation, but no charges have been filed against him. The FBI has clarified that he is not the subject of the investigation and that there is no evidence he knew about the alleged misrepresentations committed by Rush.

Meanwhile, several senior CIA officials have been suspended because of the way Rush’s funding requests were handled.

The case is also being reviewed by the inspector general of the U.S. intelligence community. The investigation aims to clarify why the CIA failed to uncover earlier the alleged inaccuracies in Rush’s academic and military records.
