He was among the Socialist Party’s first intellectuals and was active in the country’s political and institutional life.

In the diplomatic service, Zeneli contributed to developing Albania’s ties with neighboring countries and international partners.

The writings and memoirs he left behind are also important records of the history of Albanian diplomacy.

In 2018, then-President Ilir Meta awarded him the high honor of “Grand Master.” The distinction recognized his outstanding contribution to foreign policy as a journalist, publicist, MP and ambassador to important countries, as well as his commitment to the national cause and Albania’s Euro-Atlantic integration.

Who was Bashkim Zeneli?

Bashkim Zeneli devoted a significant part of his life to public service, politics and Albanian diplomacy.

After completing his law studies, he began working as a German-language translator. He later moved into journalism and foreign policy analysis. After 1991, he entered politics and became the Socialist Party’s secretary for foreign relations.

Zeneli was elected to the Assembly of Albania for two legislative terms. He also served as deputy chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy.

In his diplomatic career, he held two important posts representing Albania abroad: he was ambassador to Germany from 1998 to 2002, and then to Greece from 2002 to 2005.

During his time in Germany, Zeneli focused particularly on the Kosovo issue and strengthening Albanian-German relations. In Greece, his work aimed to develop bilateral ties and support the Albanian community living there.

He received various awards and honors for his work. Alongside the “Grand Master” title, awarded in 2018, he was recognized in Germany for his diplomatic contribution, named an “Honorary Citizen” of Athens and awarded the “Eagle of Freedom” gold medal.

Relations between Albania and Greece, as well as his diplomatic experience, are discussed in his book “A Troubled Friendship,” in which Zeneli wrote about Albanian-Greek developments and challenges.

Bashkim Zeneli leaves behind a long career in journalism, politics, parliament and diplomacy, serving in institutions and representing Albania.
