Five Dead in Greek Wildfires, All Victims Were Rescue Personnel and None Were Residents

Powerful wildfires continue to engulf several regions of Greece, causing extensive material damage and hampering the authorities’ efforts to manage the situation.

Despite the severity of the emergency and the evacuation of thousands of residents, no deaths among the civilian population have been recorded at this stage.

Meanwhile, the toll has been tragic for the forces directly involved in battling the flames. Three firefighters have died during operations carried out in recent days to extinguish the fires.

The death toll rose further a few hours ago after two firefighting helicopter pilots died when their aircraft collided during an operation to combat the flames.

Efforts by the Greek authorities to bring the active fire fronts under control are continuing, but high temperatures and unfavorable weather conditions are still fueling the spread of the fires.

Emergency teams are working around the clock to protect populated areas and prevent further casualties, while the situation remains under constant monitoring.
