Fire Tragedy in Salamina/ Two Dead and Eight Injured in Blaze

A dramatic situation is unfolding on the Greek island of Salamina, where a double fire that broke out on Sunday afternoon has caused a tragic loss of life.

During firefighting operations, firefighters found two bodies on Andromachis Street in the Peristeri area. They belonged to an elderly couple who became trapped by the flames near the initial fire.

Greek media report that eight people were injured by burns, two of whom were urgently taken to Thriasio Hospital for medical treatment.

The rapid and fatal escalation of the situation was directly influenced by strong winds on a day classified as carrying a very high risk of fire (Category 4). After the first alert was received at 14:43, the fire grew out of control within just four minutes, forcing the Operations Center to issue a general alarm.

Emergency teams are fighting the fire on two active fronts, with the most critical situation remaining in Peristeri, where the flames are burning forested areas and have rapidly advanced toward residential properties.

Alongside efforts to bring the second fire under control in the Salamina area, Greek authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident. The Piraeus Arson Crime Investigation Team was immediately mobilized to investigate the origin of the simultaneous outbreak of the fires.
