Fire in Western Attica Rages Out of Control, Up to 150 Homes Burned and Evacuation Orders Issued

A major fire continues to spread uncontrollably in Porto Germeno, in western Attica, dangerously approaching residential areas.

Due to the extreme risk, Attica, Boeotia and Evia were placed under a “Red Code” alert on Sunday. Authorities have urged residents to immediately follow all instructions and emergency notifications.

According to Top Channel correspondent Aleksandër Marku, several warnings were sent through the 112 emergency number, ordering residents to leave several rural and coastal areas. Twelve people who had been stranded near the coast were transported by boat to a safe area.

So far, no injuries have been reported in the Porto Germeno fire, but the material damage is considered severe. A local government representative said that, according to an initial assessment, the flames have reduced between 100 and 150 homes to ashes.

Approximately 500 firefighters, volunteers, specialised forest firefighting teams and more than 130 vehicles have been deployed in the operation to extinguish the flames. French and Romanian firefighters are also on the ground, deployed through the European support mechanism.

Aerial operations are being carried out with 19 aircraft and 11 helicopters, although strong winds, reaching up to force seven, have made flights and water drops over the fire fronts more difficult.

The flames have burned vast forested areas, while hundreds of smaller fire fronts remain active. According to authorities, these fronts could trigger further spread of the fire during the night.

Greece has faced dozens of fires this week. Satellite data show that around 45,000 dynym of land have been burned in Crete alone.
