A passenger ferry capsized and subsequently sank off the coast of Cyprus, killing at least eight people. According to the latest figures, 18 people remain missing.

The vessel was carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members. It began taking on water shortly after departing the coastal city of Kyrenia at around 12:30 p.m. local time on Sunday.
Following the incident, authorities detained the ferry’s captain and the seven other crew members. An investigation has been launched to determine the causes and circumstances of the sinking.
Most of those on board were rescued. The search-and-rescue operation is continuing in the area of the incident in cooperation with the Turkish authorities.
Helicopters and coast guard vessels have been deployed to the scene, while ambulances have been stationed on shore to assist those rescued.
Teams are also working to locate and recover the vessel’s data recorder, known as the “black box,” which could provide information to help determine the cause of the accident.
