Ferry overturns near Cyprus, 6 fatalities confirmed and rescue operation continues

A passenger ferry operated by Filo Shipping overturned in waters near Cyprus, shortly after departing from the port of Kyrenia (Girne), in the north of the island.

The current death toll from the accident is six, while 159 people have been rescued alive out of a total of 270 passengers and crew members. The information was confirmed by Murat Şenkul, mayor of Kyrenia, the port from which the ferry departed.

The vessel was bound for the Turkish port of Taşucut, but overturned immediately after leaving the port. So far, authorities have provided no information about the cause of the incident.

Search-and-rescue teams began work without delay, and the operation is still continuing, involving another vessel and a helicopter.

The Ministry of Health announced that all necessary measures had been activated to enable rescue teams and medical services to respond as quickly as possible.

Footage published by Turkish media shows the ferry overturned at sea, while some people on board can be seen wearing life jackets. Several vessels that were in the vicinity have also joined the rescue efforts.

At the time of the accident, the weather was clear and atmospheric conditions were favorable. Meanwhile, authorities are continuing their investigation to clarify the circumstances and causes of the overturning.
